Polio is a highly contagious disease caused by infection with three poliovirus strains (Type 1, Type 2, & Type 3) that can damage the nervous system and can cause paralysis of limbs.

India is among the 5 countries endemic for polio, with over 531 confirmed polio cases received till September 2006.
How Polio is transmitted?
Poliovirus can spread from
- Hand-to-hand transmission
- Contaminated food & water
- Feces
- Saliva, nasal secretions
- From unvaccinated children
What are the symptoms of Polio infection and who are at risk ?
The poliovirus attacks the nerve cells that control muscle movements. The symptoms include headache, tiredness, fever, stiff neck and back, and muscle pain. Polio mainly affects children under 5 years of age.
What is the treatment for Polio infection?
There is no cure for polio, it can only be prevented through immunization. Polio vaccine, given multiple times always protects a child for life.
What is the immunization schedule for Polio vaccination?
Primary course of immunization consists of 4 doses of vaccine.
From birth with an interval of 4 weeks, followed by two booster doses at the age of 18 months and at 5 years.
In endemic areas like in India additional doses will further help in controlling the disease.
