Description
ZELECT™ is a combination of electrolytes, sugar, zinc and exeipients recommended in controlling dehydration resulting from diarrhoea or by vomiting. ZELECT™ is a creamy yellowish white powder with a refreshing orange flavour.

Composition
Each Sachet (5.7gm) contains:
Sodium chloride I.P           0.7g
Potassium chloride I.P       0.3g
Sodium citrate I.P             0.58g
Dextrose anhydrous I.P     4g
Zinc sulphate I.P              0.022g
Excipients                         q.s

Mechanism of Action
Diarrhea mechanism involves an enterotoxin interfering with enterocyte cAMP and G-proteins. Water can still be absorbed by cAMP-independent mechanisms like sodium and glucose transporters (SGLT) of which two types coexist. This is achieved by combining salts like sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium citrate and glucose in the form of anhydrous dextrose. Zinc with ORS reduces diarrhoeal episode duration, severity and corrects impaired water and electrolyte absorption. This combination of ORS with Zinc in Zelect makes it a unique ORS preparation.

Indications
Zelect is indicated for:

1. Children between 3 months and 5 years of age with acute diarrheal illness with or without vomiting
2. Children with mild to moderate dehydration
3. Patient is able to tolerate oral intake
4. Normal bedside glucose
5. Parental ability and willingness to comply with procedure

Dosage
4-5 sachets per day for the episode duration

Directions for Use
Each Zelect sachet should be dissolved in 200 ml of boiled and cooled water and to be consumed immediately.

Storage
Store in a dry place.

Contraindications
Shock, altered mental status, severe dehydration, Parental limitations, Excessive vomiting, abdominal distention or absent bowel sounds, abnormal bedside glucose, (adjusted) Age 3 months or less, Unreliable home situation, uncontrolled diarrhea, complicated medical history (prematurity, cardiac anomalies, AIDS, etc.)
